Carleton ‘Carl’ Ruthling Computer Scientist

Carleton “Carl” Ruthling, 76, retired as an IT pioneer working for companies such as Univac and the Computer Science Corp. CSC.Carleton Ruthling was very active in the community including community outreach programs and habitat for humanity. Carleton passed Nov. 29 at the Reston Hospital Center. He had complications of dpneumonia. Carleon Ruthling, was last a Vienna resident, and began working in the computer science fields from the late 1950s to mid-1990s.

ACCA

He was the Project Manager for a highly innovative third-generation computer that was funded by Sperry Rand, the computer equipment and information technology and electronics company. Later, in the mid ot late 1960s, he helped start Annandale Christian Community for Action which was also known as ACCA. This was a coalition of churches that helps low-income families. He also helped establish and raise money to start a hotline telephone call in crisis center for troubled teenagers in Northern Virginia.

Later, he with others helped convince the Alexandria City Council to establish and build a halfway house that was focused on helping teenagers with drug problems. In the 1970’s he opened his home as a halfway house to prisoners, to troubled teenagers and the homeless.

Habitat for Humanity

For the last 10 years, Mr. Ruthling focused his energy on Habitat for Humanity and was active as an house leader for Habitat for Humanity in Fairfax County, Virginai, and he was a top blood donor to the Inova hospital system and donated over 100 gallons. Mr. Ruthling was start was in New Mexico being born in Santa Fe, N.M.. He with his sister Theo and twin brother Ford Ruthling, grew up on the family farm in Tesuque, N.M..,He attended the University of New Mexico as an Aerospace engineer and then enlisted and served in the Air Force in the mid-1950s as a pilot.

Great Falls Lions Club

He also was a president of the Great Falls Lions Club. He was also an usher at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Great Falls. He married Anne Harkins Ruthling for a period of 20 years.
